What is a tow ball?
A tow ball is a device that is attached to a vehicle to allow it to be able to tow trailers and caravans for example. It allows both objects to be secured together whilst minimising the amount of swaying that would take place.
What is the ideal tow ball weight?
It is recommended that your tow ball should be approximately 10% of the weight it is towing. This is to ensure that it is strong enough to tow the weight of your vehicle. However this can depend on the vehicle that is towing the caravan.
What’s the difference between 7 pin and 13 pin?
A 7 pin has less functions than a 13 pin, it only carry’s out basic lighting functions such as break lights. A 13 pin is used for the reversing light function and the many other features it has such as constant power and mist/fog lights.
How much weight do you put on a tow ball?
This depends on the weight that you are going to be putting on your tow ball. It is recommended that your tow ball is 10% of the weight you are going to be towing. The maximum weight that should be towed is 3,500kg this is to ensure that there are no complications when you are driving.
Can I tow a caravan with 7 pin electrics?
Yes, you are able to tow a caravan with 7 pin electrics. It is simply fitted to the tow bar and provides power to the caravan so that break lights will functions; however this will not supply power to the appliances in the caravan such as the fridge for example.
How is towing capacity calculated?
The maximum capacity that a vehicle can tow is usually stated in the user’s manual. However if you do not have this it is possible to calculate the towing. To figure this out you need to use this equation (Payload Capacity = Gross Vehicle Weight – Curb Weight).This will calculate the towing capacity of your vehicle.
How long does it take to fit a tow bar?
The time it takes to fit a tow bar can depend on the vehicle but it usually only takes around 2-3 hours to do so. However a trained professional should fit your tow bar to ensure that it has been done correctly and is safe to tow vehicles on the road.
